All Saints Church, Frindsbury
Located in Frindsbury, Kent, All Saints Church is a historic place of worship requiring careful consideration when undertaking repairs to its high-level and exposed areas. Spotlight Construction was appointed to carry out specialist shingle repair works to a damaged section of the church roof, using specialist steeplejack access to safely reach the affected area while minimising disturbance to the existing roof coverings.
Specialist Steeplejack Access
Due to the location and difficult-to-access nature of the repair area, a specialist two-person steeplejack access team attended site to safely reach the section identified for repair. Soft packing was used around ladders and ropes where required, with particular care taken throughout the access process to protect the existing shingles.
Given the age and condition of the existing roof covering, there was a risk that some shingles could become damaged or displaced during access. Replacement shingles were therefore included within the works, allowing any affected areas to be repaired as part of the project.
Shingle Repair Works
Once access had been safely established, the damaged section of the roof was carefully repaired using replacement shingles.
The new shingles were selected to match the existing roof covering as closely as practicable, helping to maintain the appearance and character of the building. The replacement shingles were fixed using copper nails, consistent with the existing fixing method understood to have been used across the roof.
Particular attention was given to ensuring the repaired area was securely reinstated while keeping the works sympathetic to the existing roof and surrounding materials.
Lightning Protection
Alongside the shingle repair works, Spotlight Construction also carried out a test and inspection of the existing lightning protection system.
The inspection formed an important part of the works, providing an opportunity to assess the condition and performance of the system while our specialist team was already undertaking high-level works at the church.
Careful Restoration & Workmanship
Working on an older building requires a careful and considered approach, particularly where existing roof coverings are vulnerable to damage. Our team combined specialist steeplejack access techniques with careful handling of the existing shingles to minimise disruption and protect the surrounding roof.
Replacement materials were selected with the existing building in mind, ensuring the completed repairs blended as naturally as possible with the surrounding roof covering.
Outcome
The completed works successfully reinstated the damaged section of shingle roofing, helping to protect the building from further exposure while maintaining the appearance of the existing roof.
By combining specialist steeplejack access, traditional shingle repair techniques and lightning protection inspection, Spotlight Construction was able to provide a practical and sympathetic solution to the requirements of All Saints Frindsbury.
A photographic report was provided on completion, documenting the works undertaken before all specialist access equipment was removed from site.
